Quake Live

Quake live

Since getting my Macbook I haven’t played games as much, partially because of lack of suitable hardware to play the newer more popular games. However, Id Software’s latest addition to the Quake series had caught my eye, it will be an updated version of Quake 3 Arena that is advertisement supported and 100% free!

My very first online gaming experience was with the Unreal series. The beauty of Unreal at the time was that even with a 300ms ping the games were still playable, even though there was a fairly noticeable delay between clicking and the weapon firing. In comparison Quake 3 to my disappointment really did require a low latency connection, and when I finally did upgrade to broadband and was able to play the scene was dying out and there wasn’t as much buzz surrounding the game.

I am excited to think that Quake Live will rejuvenate the scene once more and get a lot more people playing what is effectively Quake 3. There have already been some competitions held at Quakecon 2008, and watching the 1 vs. 1 DM final has wet my appetite even more!

Video embedded after the break.

ID released the Quake 3 Arena-Source-Code (Engine and Stuff, but only some Level-Data) under an Opensource License (GPL) and some people grabbed it and made OpenArena (http://openarena.ws/) which is based on the Engine, it’s free, no ads, a lot of the old Quake III Arena Mods, Bots and Maps are already available for it and a lot of people are already playing it again :)
